Palisades Fire and Hurst Fire Emergency Update
Wednesday, January 8, 4pm [Los Angeles County Supervisor, Lindsey Horvath]
Listen to “Palisades Fire and Hurst Fire Emergency Update” on Spreaker.Amidst the dangerous wind and Red Flag conditions, the Palisades Fire has grown to more than 15,830 acres, and is currently affecting Pacific Palisades, Topanga Canyon, Sunset Mesa, eastern Malibu, and northern Santa Monica, and surrounding communities.
Around 10pm last night, a fire broke out in Sylmar due to a lightning strike, and has grown to more than 700 acres, the Hurst Fire. A small brush fire in the Sepulveda Basin broke out this morning at around 6:15am, the Woodley Fire, but firefighters quickly responded and have begun to contain that fire at 35 acres.
With the explosion of the Eaton Fire in Altadena last night, there are now three major fires burning in LA County, with two of them in our District. Hurricane force winds grounded firefighting aircraft last night, but helicopter and airplane firefighting resumed this morning. Firefighters and emergency personnel are working tirelessly to protect lives and property, and our office is actively monitoring the situation with updates from first responders and local leaders.
Safety of our residents is the number one priority. Please follow all evacuation orders and instruction from public safety officials — these measures are in place to keep you and your loved ones safe, and cooperation is critical to save lives.

Yesterday, Chair Kathryn Barger signed a state of local emergency for the wind event, which includes all of the ongoing fires, and President Biden granted Governor Newsom’s request for a federal emergency declaration. Mayor Bass has declared a local emergency for the City of LA. Together, every resource available across all levels of government is being leveraged. President Biden has offered the National Guard to support first responders, and 2 units trained to work on fires have joined the effort. We are thankful for their support and will continue coordinating with local and state leaders as the fire progresses.
Tens of thousands of residents are under evacuation order or evacuation warning, and the extreme wind event continues to pose challenges to firefighters. If you are told to evacuate, please follow directions of emergency personnel. Do not hesitate to evacuate!
We are grateful to the courageous work of our first responders throughout the night and this morning. For those affected by any of these fires, we understand how difficult this situation is — it is heartbreaking to leave behind a home, but it is essential to follow instructions. We will get through this.
